Sluggish roadworks along many streets in Ho Chi Minh City have become a headache for commuters and residents, especially amid busier traffic ahead of key national holidays in Vietnam.

On Vo Van Ngan and Kha Van Can Streets in Thu Duc City, two construction sites of a drainage project have been blocking parts of these roads for multiple months, which worsens traffic congestion during rush hours.

The building site on Vo Van Ngan Street, 20 meters long and 2.5 meters wide, significantly narrowed down the road surface, forcing buses and cars to travel on the sidewalk.

Many traffic accidents have occurred as a result, according to local residents.

The repair work on Street No. 10, located about one kilometer away, also poses a lot of dangers for commuters.

"I support the repair of this route, but the construction time needs to be arranged reasonably,” said Hoang Ngan, a resident in Linh Dong Ward.

“How can we enjoy the upcoming Lunar New Year [Tet] holiday if construction materials are left on the street and in front of our houses?”

A similar situation was also recorded along a section of Luong Dinh Cua Street in Thu Duc City.

There were 79 roadworks on 51 streets across Ho Chi Minh City as of November, according to the municipal Department of Transport’s inspectorate.

Regarding the roadwork on Vo Van Ngan Street, the contractor has been repeatedly booked for multiple violations, but the situation has not seemed to improve.

The department has thus revoked the permit of the contractor for two months.

A traffic inspector stated that he and his team have examined and dealt with violations regarding roadworks across the city since the beginning of this year.

Under the direction from the transport department, traffic inspectors will continue to deal with these violations from now until Tet, which is just a few weeks away, to minimize risks of traffic jams and accidents.
