A foreign teacher in Ho Chi Minh City has been dismissed after he engaged in a confrontation with his school’s security guard while defending a student.
Duong Van Thu, principal of Nguyen Thi Dieu High School in District 3, confirmed to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Thursday that K., a foreign teacher, had a scuffle with N., the security guard, at the school on the morning of December 9.
N., 65, was checking the names and classes of the students who were leaving the school that morning, Thu elaborated.
According to the school regulations, only 11th graders are allowed to go home after the fourth lesson, while 10th and 12th graders leave the school after the fifth lesson.
Among the students, a girl was wearing a jacket, which prevented N. from seeing her name tag.
The security guard asked the schoolgirl to take off her jacket, and began yelling at her when she refused to follow his request.
K. did not agree with N.’s behavior and pushed the latter, causing him to fall onto the ground.
A scuffle then broke out between the two men.
“The school considers this an act of violence, and that the actions of K. and N. are inappropriate and affect the school’s reputation,” the principal stated.
“We have convened a meeting with the two parties after the incident.”
N. was requested to stop checking the students’ name tags, which he was not tasked with, and not to repeat similar mistakes.
K. was allowed to continue teaching at the school and was required to report any wrongdoings to those in charge instead of using violence as a solution.
On Tuesday, while waiting for the school board’s final decision, Hoang Doan Hanh, head of the English department at Nguyen Thi Dieu High School, asked K. to refrain from discussing the incident on social media, as that could result in misunderstandings and complicate the situation.
However, the foreign teacher did not agree and started yelling at Hanh, as well as kicking the door of the teachers’ room.
After this incident, the school board had a meeting and decided to terminate the labor contract with K..
On Wednesday, K. posted a status on Facebook about the incident and incited students to defame their own school.
The information was later shared across the social media platform.
