The National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Hanoi has announced an irremediable rabies case where a patient was bitten by a dog three to four months ago, but did not get a rabies vaccine after the incident, and doctors can now do nothing to cure him.

Doctors at the hospital have given the 30-year-old male patient from northern Phu Tho Province a death prognosis and let his family take him home.

The family said after the patient was bitten by a stray dog, he beat the animal to death and ate it.

He did not get rabies inoculation afterward.

Around three or four months later, the patient had symptoms of weakness, agitation, fear of water and wind, headache and shoulder pain.

He sought medical treatment at a private clinic before being transferred to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases, where he tested positive for the rabies virus.

Previously, the Ministry of Health warned of a rabies outbreak risk nationwide after cases had been detected widely in Vietnamese provinces which were not previously rabies hotspots.
