Nguyen Viet Dung, chairman of Quang Nam Province’s Dat Quang Group, has been fined VND6.5 million (US$276.6) for assaulting a golf caddy with a golf club in Da Nang City late last year.
The fine was handed down by police in Ngu Hanh Son District, Da Nang, where the golf course is located.
Dung is also a sitting member of the People’s Council of Quang Nam for the 2021-26 tenure.
A police report on the case showed that Dung and three friends visited BRG Da Nang Golf Course in Hoa Hai Ward, Ngu Hanh Son District, Da Nang in December 2022.
The group was assigned four caddies, one of whom was N.T.A.L., a resident of My An Ward, Ngu Hanh Son Ward.
During the round, L. and H. – another caddy – began arguing over how many clubs Dung had used to complete a hole. The argument upset Dung, who wound up beating both caddies with a golf club.
One of Dung’s swings hit L. in the shoulder. The club then broke after hitting the ground.
L. was then taken to Da Nang General Hospital and treated for a minor shoulder injury.
Dung was not prosecuted because the nature and the level of his violation were considered not so serious, according to Ngu Hanh Son police officers.
The People’s Procuracy of Ngu Hanh Son District supported the police decision.
The Da Nang Forensics Center concluded that there was no foundation to determine L.’s level of injury.
L. also requested that no criminal charges be brought against Dung.
