A convenience store collapsed in District 4, Ho Chi Minh City, killing one on Wednesday morning

The accident occurred on Vinh Hoi Street, with witnesses saying the first floor of the convenience store suddenly collapsed, trapping people on the ground floor inside.

The Fire Prevention and Fighting and Rescue Police Division said they were informed of the collapse at around 9:00 am.

At the time rescue forces arrived, eight people had managed to get out of the collapse while one was still stuck inside.

At 9:45 am, a seriously injured female victim was brought out unconscious from the wreckage and rushed to the hospital.

Dr. Nguyen Duy Long, director of the 115 Emergency Center in Ho Chi Minh City, confirmed to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the 15-year-old victim had passed away.

“At the scene, the victim's heart stopped beating,” Long said.

“Doctors tried to resuscitate her to no avail.

"The victim was then taken to District 4 Hospital and later pronounced dead.”

According to Major Huynh Nguyen Thuan, vice-captain of the Fire Prevention and Fighting and Rescue Police Division under the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Pubic Security, the initial cause of the collapse is the overloading of goods on the upper floor.

“The store stocked goods for Tet [Lunar New Year] and kept them on the upper floor, leading to the collapse,” Thuan said.
