A Vietnam Town is being developed in Udon Thani Province, which is home to the largest overseas Vietnamese community in Thailand.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Thailand Phan Chi Thanh and Thanadorn Phuttharaksa, mayor of Udon Thani City of the namesake Thai province, on Saturday visited the construction site of the project and inspected its progress.

During the visit, Ambassador Thanh said the development of the Vietnam Town in Udon Thani is indispensable.

The project is being jointly conducted by the Udon Thani authorities and Vietnamese-Thai people in the province.

Udon Thani is currently home to more than 60,000 Vietnamese people. Vietnam’s late President Ho Chi Minh used to live there in the 1920s.

Over the past 100 years, the Vietnamese-Thai people community has developed strongly and played an increasingly important role in Udon Thani.

Therefore, the Vietnam Town project received the support of the local authorities.

The town, when in place, is expected to become a cultural hub of Vietnamese in the northeastern region of Thailand, attracting visitors, especially Vietnamese people living in Thailand and Laos, and tourists from Vietnam.

In addition to the contributions of individuals and enterprises, the Udon Thani City authorities have spent three million baht (nearly US$86,0000) building and upgrading infrastructure in the town.

Visiting the construction site of the Vietnam Town project in Alley 2, Si Suk Street in Udon Thani City, Ambassador Thanh and Udon Thani City Mayor Thanadorn discussed measures to speed up the progress of the project to put it into operation early.

Thanh thanked Mayor Thanadorn and the administration of Udon Thani City for their support for the Vietnamese community in the province and the investment in the project.
