Police in Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City said on Thursday afternoon that they are holding a man in custody for selling his boss’ Maybach wheels worth VND141 million (US$5,943) without obtaining the approval of the luxury car owner.

Nguyen Manh Tuan, 35, a resident of District 10, has been arrested for an investigation of trust abuse in order to appropriate property.

Two other men, 41-year-old Nguyen Tuan Anh, living in Thu Duc City, and 30-year-old Vo Phuong Phuoc Thanh, living in Hoc Mon District, have been apprehended for the investigation of consuming property acquired by another person in a crime.

Tuan drove his boss, V.H.M.V., 31, on the latter’s Maybach from her home in Binh Thanh District to Thu Duc City on February 27.

V. hired Tuan via Cho Tot, an online platform for re-commerce and unskilled labor recruitment, without having much information about him other than a photo of his citizen identification and still put him on probation.

After taking V. to Thu Duc, Tuan took the car to a tire shop owned by Tuan Anh, who is also commonly known as Bi, on Le Trong Tan Street in Tan Phu District, instead of returning to V.’s house.

Tuan asked Tuan Anh to swap four sets of wheels and tires of the Maybach with four equivalent sets of another car.

Tuan was paid VND7 million ($295) by Tuan Anh, who then sold the four sets of Maybach wheels and tires to Phuoc Thanh for VND33 million ($1,391).

The incident was later discovered by V.’s family and reported to police officers.

Officers quickly arrested the three suspects and recovered the appropriated car parts, whose market value is estimated at more than VND141 million.

According to police officers, Tuan had had a conviction for property theft, while Tuan Anh had been convicted of embezzlement of state property.
