-- Australian Governor-General David Hurley and his spouse Linda Hurley arrived in Hanoi on Monday afternoon, beginning their four-day visit to Vietnam at the invitation of Vietnamese State President Vo Van Thuong. This is the first foreign leader paying a state visit to Vietnam this year and the first national guest that State President Thuong has received in his new position.

-- A truck carrying watermelons on Monday crashed into a mountainside while taking a bend on a road in Phu Yen Province, south-central Vietnam, leaving four people dead and five others seriously injured.

-- Police in Tien Giang Province, southern Vietnam on Monday apprehended a local man for allegedly murdering his female neighbor. Footage from a resident’s camera showed that the man used a wooden stick to hit the woman’s head and shoulders 22 times.

-- The People’s Committee of Dong Nai Province, a neighbor of Ho Chi Minh City, has approved the appointment of contractors for six public infrastructure development packages that are lagging behind schedule in the Loc An – Binh Son resettlement area of the mammoth Long Thanh International Airport project.

-- Rescuers in the northern mountainous province of Ha Giang have successfully saved a man who fell into a 50-meter-deep hole after being hit by a car running backward on the famous Ma Pi Leng mountain pass. The man only suffered minor injuries.

-- All Vietnamese visitors to Hoi An Ancient Town, a famous tourist destination in central Quang Nam Province, except for Hoi An residents with legitimate reasons, will be required to buy entrance tickets from May 15. The tickets cost VND120,000 (US$5.1) each for foreigners and VND80,000 ($3.4) each for domestic tourists, according to the Hoi An City People’s Committee.

-- Police in Dong Nai Province on Monday said they had detained four suspects for allegedly making, trading, and storing military weapons.

-- Vietnam needs VND849.5 trillion ($36.3 billion) to develop at least one million social houses for low-income laborers in industrial parks in 2021-30, according to a plan approved by Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

-- SaigonTex & SaigonFabric 2023, an exhibition of the textile-garment sector, will be held at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Center in District 7, Ho Chi Minh City from Wednesday to Saturday. The event will be the largest since 1991, featuring 1,700 booths of over 1,300 enterprises from 21 countries and territories in the world.
