Four students were killed in two separate drowning accidents in Vietnam’s north-central provinces of Nghe An and Ha Tinh on Wednesday.
Authorities in Gia Hanh Commune, Can Loc District, Ha Tinh Province confirmed on Wednesday evening that two elementary students drowned while taking a bath in a local river with their friends earlier in the afternoon.
They were identified as N.N.K.L. and T.N.Tr., two fifth graders at Gia Hanh Elementary School in the namesake commune.
Their bodies were handed over to their families.
In neighboring Nghe An Province, rescuers were working to recover the bodies of drowning victims in coastal waters in Nghi Thiet Commune, Nghi Loc District as of 7:30 pm on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, a group of students visited the coastal area.
Residents later discovered some belongings and six pairs of slide shoes were put on the beach.
They searched for the owners and found the bodies of two female students floating in the water.
Relatives of the two deceased visited the scene to identify the bodies.
Every year, schools in Nghe An and Ha Tinh organize extracurricular activities to teach students water safety.
Local authorities have also planted flags and warning signs on the beach.
Despite their efforts, Nghe An and Ha Tinh record dozens of drowning deaths every summer.
