Three large verdant flamboyant trees in the yard of a high school in Ho Chi Minh City have been cut down as they were found to be hollow.
The hollows have a diameter of up to 80-90 centimeters in some sections.
Many students of Bui Thi Xuan High School in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City were surprised at the hollows in the trees, which were 40-50 years old.
“The flamboyant trees are green and flowering, so I do not think that they are so largely hollow that two people could stay inside at the same time," Cao Thanh Danh, a student of the school, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.
"They might have fallen in strong winds.”

Large termite mounds were also found inside these trees.
The school weighed the decision heavily before chopping down the trees as they were witnesses to the school’s history, said principal Huynh Thanh Phu.
However, the safety of students must be the top priority, Phu added.
“We invited experts from Ho Chi Minh City Greenery Parks Co. Ltd. to check the trees and they found that the flamboyant trees were hollow," the principal noted.

“After cutting down and sawing the trees, we realized that our decision was right. It is fortunate that there is no incident. Other schools growing flamboyant trees in their yards should take note.”
Bui Thi Xuan High School will plant creepers to provide shade for students and create green spaces for the school.
