Hailstorms accompanied by whirlwinds across several northern Vietnamese localities damaged over 1,600 houses and flooded some streets in the tourist town of Sa Pa in Lao Cai Province over the weekend.

A preliminary report from the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control showed that the north and north-central regions experienced moderate to heavy rainfall, with precipitation ranging from 40mm to 80mm, from Friday evening to Saturday evening.

Between 7:00 pm on Saturday and 7:00 am on Sunday, the northern mountainous area and the north-central coast had a rainfall of 20-88mm.

Heavy rain caused flooding on certain roads in the center of Sa Pa around 9:00 pm on Saturday.

As a result, 1,635 houses were damaged, 2,538 hectares of crops were destroyed, and 11 schools suffered from the rainstorms and flooding, according to brief statistics from the affected provinces, including Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Dien Bien, Thai Nguyen, Cao Bang, Phu Tho, and Tuyen Quang.

The Lao Cai meteorological station reported that the cold air resulted in a drop in temperature in various localities across Lao Cai on Sunday.

Sa Pa experienced the lowest temperature at 15 degrees Celsius, with the weather turning chilly and continuing to be unfavorable with thunderstorms throughout the day.

Starting on Monday, there will be a decrease in the intensity and extent of rainfall and a slight increase in temperature.

However, certain tourist spots, such as Sa Pa and Y Ty, are still expected to have rainfall, mostly during nighttime.

Authorities recommend that people traveling to the mountainous regions should bring umbrellas, raincoats, and warm clothes.

While traveling, people should be cautious to prevent slipping.

Additionally, during thunderstorms, it is important to be aware of hazardous gusts of wind and lightning strikes.

The National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting predicts that there will be some rain in the evening and at night in the northern region through Wednesday.

In the northwestern region, there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms on Monday and Tuesday, followed by sunny days from Tuesday to Friday, with some areas experiencing high temperatures.

The center evaluates that the weather will be favorable for people to travel to tourist destinations.
