Many parts of Vietnam’s northern region experienced heavy rains from Sunday evening to early Monday morning, after many days of scorching temperatures.
Notably, hail hit Cao Bang Province, causing damage to many house roofs.
The northeastern region, Lao Cai, Yen Bai and Hoa Binh provinces, and other provinces from Thanh Hoa to Quang Tri, received medium to heavy downpours, according to the national weather center.
From 7:00 pm on Sunday to 8:00 am on Monday, rainfalls in Thai Nguyen and Tuyen Quang Provinces in the northern region were measured at 140 and 155 millimeters, respectively.
Heavy rains, plus strong winds, blew away the roofs of many houses and toppled tens of trees in Thai Nguyen.
Some streets in Thai Nguyen City in the namesake province were submerged in the rainwater on Sunday night, while many households in the low-lying areas were struggling with rainwater entering their houses.
In Dong Hy District in the province, several roads were so badly flooded that officials signaled danger to residents.
In Cao Bang Province, hail swept through many mountainous communes in Ha Quang, Trung Khanh, and Quang Hoa Districts on Sunday afternoon.
The hail lasted for nearly one hour, damaging crops and houses, said the leader of Ha Quang District.
Locals said that hailstones measured from 0.5 to 1.5 centimeters in diameter.
Heavy rains, coupled with thunderstorms, battered the north-central province of Nghe An on Sunday afternoon, leaving one wounded, blowing away 75 house roofs, and destroying six houses and three power poles, according to the national steering committee for natural disaster prevention and control.
The northern region and the localities from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien-Hue are forecast to experience rains with precipitation ranging from 20mm to 80mm on Monday.
It rained lightly in Hanoi during rush hour on Monday morning, causing traffic jams on several main routes.
The city might continue to experience moderate to heavy downpours, with a rainfall reaching up to 70mm on Monday.
The Central Highlands and southern regions will face heavy downpours and thunderstorms on Monday evening.
Many parts of Ho Chi Minh City had much-awaited rains on Monday morning.
