Fourteen people from Lai Chau Province, northern Vietnam exhibited symptoms of poisoning and required immediate medical attention at hospitals following the consumption of homemade wild mushroom soup during lunch earlier this week.
After nearly two days of medical treatment, the condition of the 14 individuals has stabilized, a local official said on Thursday.
“They are still undergoing medical care and monitoring at the hospital,” the official added.
The patients were among a group of 21 people joining a lunch offered by the family of Hang A Pao, a 49-year-old resident of Sung Phai Commune in the province’s Lai Chau City, on Tuesday.
There were a total of seven dishes in the meal, including a soup made from wild mushrooms naturally growing in Pao’s garden and picked by his family.
Seven individuals abstained from consuming the unfamiliar mushroom dish, and they did not experience any symptoms of poisoning, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
At around 2:00 pm on the same day, Hang A M. was the first diner to exhibit symptoms of poisoning, followed by an additional 13 individuals who also displayed similar symptoms and were subsequently transported to the Sung Phai Commune health station and Lai Chau General Hospital by their family members and local medical personnel.
After admitting the 14 affected people and conducting preliminary examinations, the healthcare staff implemented the treatment protocol for food poisoning on the patients, including administering antibiotics through intravenous infusion and replenishing electrolytes with intravenous fluids.
Local authorities have collected food samples from Pao’s house for analysis in order to identify the cause of the incident.
