A torrential rain lasting more than an hour in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday evening left multiple streets inundated.

It began raining at around 9:00 pm in Thu Duc City, Binh Thanh District, and Phu Nhuan District, packing wind gusts and thunderstorms.

Around 30 minutes later, the rain spread over neighboring districts such as Go Vap, Tan Binh, District 1, resulting in flooding, power outages, and tree uprooting.

A torrential rain lasting over an hour floods many streets and uproots trees in Ho Chi Minh City, June 22, 2023.

The rainfall measured at 10:00 pm was 40mm in District 1 and 60mm in District 10, according to the southern weather center.

Flood-prone streets such as Le Duc Tho and Nguyen Van Khoi in Go Vap, Ung Van Khiem in Binh Thanh, or Thao Dien, Quoc Huong, and Nguyen Duy Trinh in Thu Duc were submerged by rainwater.

Moreover, the downpour accompanied by strong winds uprooted a number of trees, causing traffic congestion in some areas.

An over-200-meter road section on National Highway 13 that runs across Hiep Binh Chanh and Hiep Binh Phuoc Wards in Thu Duc was heavily deluged, forcing vehicles to slow down.

My Le, a local woman, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the road in her area was heavily inundated after a 15-minute rain.

When the rainy season comes, her small business suffers poor sales due to flooding, Le said.

“Several motorcyclists have fallen onto the road, while many motorbikes broke down due to flooding,” Le added.
