The Ho Chi Minh City Forest Protection Department on Wednesday received a clouded monitor handed over by a local woman in the outlying district of Binh Chanh.
The female clouded monitor, scientifically named Varanus nebulosus, weighs three kilograms and is listed in the group of endangered and critically endangered animals.
Tran Thi Nga, 43, residing in Binh Chanh’s Binh Hung Commune, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that her family members discovered the clouded monitor in their garden one week ago, after hearing their dogs barking and encircling the clouded monitor there.

Her husband used a cage to capture the clouded monitor.
After learning that it is a rare and endangered species, the family reported and handed over the animal to the municipal Department of Forest Protection.
The rangers then took the clouded monitor to an animal rescue center in Cu Chi, another outlying district in the city, for special care before releasing it into the wild.
