As many as 32 sites along rivers and canals across Ho Chi minh City have been battered by land erosion, including eight critically-eroded zones, negatively affecting 1,328 households, according to the municipal administration.

Thus far, the city has earmarked VND3.474 trillion (US$146.8 million) for building anti-erosion embankments in 23 of the 32 affected locations.

The People’s Committee has also asked the Department of Transport to develop a plan to build embankments to protect the Dong Nai and Can Giuoc riverbanks from erosion.

As for currently under-construction anti-erosion projects, investors were told to speed up efforts to appraise and complete work on them in order to protect both humans and property.

The administrations of Thu Duc City, under the jurisdiction of the southern metropolis, and districts citywide have had to warn local residents living in erosion-prone areas of possible risks, regularly examine vulnerable sites, and propose erosion control measures to authorities.

Completed anti-erosion projects must be handed over to operators in order to fully exploit the benefits of the projects, the municipal administration said.
