The Peacekeeping Operations Department under the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense organized a homecoming ceremony for staff members of the Vietnamese level-2 field hospital No. 4 in Hanoi on Sunday evening after they finished one year of the United Nations Peacekeeping mission in South Sudan in Africa.

A C-17 transport aircraft operated by the Royal Australian Air Force with 51 Vietnamese doctors on board landed at the military airport of the Air Force 371 at 10:00 pm on Sunday.

The remaining 12 staff members will return to Vietnam after handing over the mission to the level-2 field hospital Rotation 5.

Chairing the ceremony, Colonel Pham Manh Thang, head of the Peacekeeping Operations Department, honored and praised these medical workers for their dedication and contributions to UN missions.

They have excellently finished their missions in the African nation, heard the event.

Colonel Thang also thanked the agencies under the Ministry of National Defense and the Australian Embassy in Vietnam for their close cooperation with the Peacekeeping Operations Department to deploy the fourth level-2 field hospital.

Apart from urging designated agencies to commend these medical workers for their contributions, Colonel Thang also asked the staff members of the hospital to get ready for their new duties.

Major Le Viet Anh, deputy director of the hospital, said that during the one-year service, the hospital treated over 1,400 patients, conducted nine operations, and used traditional medicine and physical therapy on 150 patients.

The doctors of the hospital also successfully saved many patients suffering from strokes, anaphylaxis, acute pancreatitis, acute kidney failure, and malignant malaria.

Notably, the Vietnamese doctors performed an emergency cesarean for a woman in the 38th week of pregnancy.

In addition, the hospital opened an obstetrics clinic, built a herb garden, and produced and supplied 689 liters of compressed oxygen to level-1 hospitals.

“The staff members of the level-2 field hospital No. 4 have become peace envoys, and introduced the country and people’s beautiful images to foreigners,” Major Anh said.

The fourth level-2 field hospital included 63 members, with 12 medical female workers. The hospital was deployed to replace Vietnam’s third level-2 hospital in Bentiu in South Sudan.

For their achievements and outstanding contributions, the 63 staff members of Vietnam’s Level-2 Field Hospital Rotation 4 operating at the United Nations Mission in South Sudan were honored with the UN Peacekeeping Medals in March.

Vietnam sent 63 staff members to run the fifth rotation of its level-2 field hospital as part of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan on April 29.
