A 37-year-old woman from Bac Giang Province in northern Vietnam lost fingers and suffered damage to her eye after her smartphone exploded while charging on Wednesday.

The Vietnam German Friendship Hospital in Hanoi admitted the patient shortly after the incident.

Dr. Nguyen Trong Tai, a specialist in the hospital’s outpatient and orthopedic treatment department, said that the patient was being treated for facial deformity, right eye damage, severed fingers on her right hand, a wounded trachea, and several other injuries.

“The patient is in stable health following her surgery,” Dr. Tai said, adding that finger loss will limit her labor ability.

Over the past two years, the Vietnam German Friendship Hospital has admitted five patients with injuries due to their smartphones exploding while charging.

This case, however, is the most serious the hospital has seen.

Doctors advise smartphone users to be careful while using their phones and try to avoid their use while charging.
