Saltwater intrusion has affected Ho Chi Minh City as the dry season begins, with the saltwater line encroaching as far as Cat Lai in Thu Duc City and parts of Dong Nai Province, according to the Southern Regional Hydrometeorological Center.

The 4‰ salinity boundary extends approximately 71-72km from the main river mouth to the river and canal system of Ho Chi Minh City.

The highest salinity intrusion is expected on Friday, with the following measuring stations recording peak levels: Ly Nhon Station on the Soai Rap River at 23.5‰, Nha Be Station on the Dong Dien Canal at 13.2‰, and Cat Lai Station on the Saigon River at 7.5‰.

Long Dai Station on the Dong Nai River, located about 80km from the sea, is also expected to experience salinity of 2.2‰.

Following the high tide on Wednesday, water levels will drop quickly, causing the salinity intrusion to recede.

However, by early next week, water levels are forecast to rise again.

The highest salinity at most stations is expected early next week and will persist throughout the week.

While these levels are similar to or slightly lower than those observed in 2024, they are still above the long-term average.

Saltwater intrusion with a salinity of 4‰ is forecast to extend about 71-73km from the main river mouth next week.

The risk of natural disasters from saltwater intrusion in Ho Chi Minh City’s river systems is rated as level three out of four.

High salinity levels in rivers, canals, and streams may lead to fresh water shortages, significantly impacting daily life and production.

According to meteorological forecasts, temperatures in Ho Chi Minh City are expected to gradually rise throughout this month.

In the first half of the month, the weather will remain relatively cool, with occasional heat around 35 degrees Celsius in the city center for one to two days, followed by a rapid temperature drop.

In the second half of the month, localized heat will continue, but it will last longer.

Hot weather and limited rainfall are likely to intensify saltwater intrusion.
