Hanoi will ban vans with more than 16 seats from entering the Hoan Kiem Lake and Old Quarter areas starting next month in an attempt to reduce congestion and emissions.

As approved by the Hanoi People’s Committee, starting March 1, vans with more than 16 seats will be banned from the Hoan Kiem Lake and Old Quarter areas from 6:30 am to 8:30 am and 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm.

The restricted route includes Hang Giay, Dong Xuan, Hang Duong, Hang Ngang, Hang Dao, Dinh Tien Hoang, Hang Dau, Tran Nhat Duat, and Nguyen Huu Huan; streets like Ly Quoc Su, Nha Tho, Nha Chung, Quang Trung (from Trang Thi to Nha Chung), Au Trieu, Bao Khanh, Hang Trong, and Hang Hanh; and Bao Khanh alleys.

Public and school buses are exempt from the ban.

To ensure convenience for residents and tourists, four transit points will be set up along Ba Trieu, Tran Nhat Duat, Phung Hung Streets, and the Dong Xuan market area, using environmentally friendly vehicles.

The ban aims to reduce congestion, improve the environment, and cut emissions in the Old Quarter.

The measure will be piloted for six months, after which the effectiveness will be evaluated and reported to the city for further consideration.
