Police in Tay Ho District, Hanoi have impounded five boats and taken three individuals into custody for allegedly fishing in the Vietnamese capital city’s iconic West Lake, according to the People’s Committee of the district.
These suspects were believed to have repeatedly gone fishing in the lake at night.
Nguyen Dinh Khuyen, chairman of Tay Ho, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Thursday morning that police had seized five boats and temporarily taken three individuals into custody on Wednesday night.
Many residents had earlier reported that illegal fishing was being carried out by a group of people in the lake.

The suspects had been seen rowing boats to the middle of the lake to catch fish around midnight for several nights.
“After conducting a check on the lake, we found a makeshift tent hidden in the trees near Kim Nguu Temple in Quang An Ward," said Khuyen.
"We also impounded five powerboats and rowboats, and brought the three individuals who own the boats to the ward headquarters for questioning.”
The suspects admitted that they had often fished unlawfully in West Lake at night.
The Tay Ho administration and police are working to gather evidence of the group having caught several tons of fish in the lake.
