As soon as Tri An Hydropower Reservoir in the southern Vietnamese province of Dong Nai released water on Friday, a lively scene unfolded with locals and people from adjacent neighborhoods eagerly engaging in angling there.
The reservoir, which was built near a section of the Dong Nai River flowing through the province’s Vinh Cuu District, some 65 kilometers northeast of Ho Chi Minh City, was scheduled to discharge water to regulate its water level at 1:00 pm on the day.
According to the locals in Vinh Cuu District, whenever Tri An Hydropower Reservoir releases water, fish from the Dong Nai River tends to swim against the current to migrate upstream.
Upon reaching the spillway, these fish cannot proceed further.

As a result, when the water discharge is halted, the fish become trapped in the water below the base of the reservoir’s dam.
This annual occurrence is eagerly anticipated by people and is viewed as a fortunate event.

One hour prior to the scheduled time on Friday, hundreds of people from Vinh Cuu District, Trang Bom District, and Bien Hoa City arrived at the resevoir, prepared with the necessary tools and equipment to make some big catches.
Once the spillway was shut, they started casting their nets and hooks to catch fish, creating a festive atmosphere.

“This year, the fish are not plentiful, and they are noticeably smaller compared to previous years,” said Duong, an experienced fisherman who had went angling at the reservoir several times.
In addition to the occasional anglers, hundreds of others came to watch the energetic spectacle.
Though much of the public shares in the joy of these fishermen, some worry that their actions may hinder the local fish reproduction.

The Tri An Hydropower Reservoir supplies water to the Tri An Hydropower Plant, which generates electricity at an installed capacity of 400MW and average annual power output of 1.7 billion kWh.
Besides contributing to the national grid, the reservoir helps regulate floods in downstream areas and provides water for more than 10 million people in Dong Nai and Binh Duong Provinces, as well as Ho Chi Minh City.
