Thousands of vehicles got stuck in heavy traffic on Vo Nguyen Giap Road, which was renamed from a Hanoi Highway section last week, in Thu Duc City under Ho Chi Minh City for hours on Wednesday morning.
A street section from the Binh Thai Intersection to the Rach Chiec Bridge saw an influx of traffic as container trucks queued up to enter inland ports along the road.
Thousands of motorcycles were trapped in severe congestion. They had to follow one another and move at a snail’s pace.
Roads parallel with Vo Nguyen Giap Road faced the same fate as vehicles zigzagged through the gaps between others to inch out of the crowd.

Tran Tuan Dung, 40, a container truck driver, said he was stuck on Vo Nguyen Giap Road while driving from Dong Nai, a neighbor of Ho Chi Minh City, to an inland port in Truong Tho Ward, Thu Duc City to transport a shipping container.
Lanes for autos were full of tractor-trailer, trucks, and automobiles. The traffic was also heavy in lanes for motorbikes.
Bui Thi Thanh Hoa, 30, residing in Thu Duc City, said she travels to work by motorbike every day. However, she was late for work on Wednesday due to the serious traffic jam.
“I normally arrive at my company in the city center at 8:30 am, but I was stuck [on Vo Nguyen Giap Road] at that time [on Wednesday],” Hoa added.
Many drivers shared that the area often sees congestion, especially during peak hours, mainly due to the high number of container trucks running to and from ports.
On Wednesday last week, the Ho Chi Minh City administration organized a road renaming ceremony for a section of Hanoi Highway, which was renamed after late General Vo Nguyen Giap.
The stretch between Thu Duc Intersection in Thu Duc City and the Saigon Bridge is now Vo Nguyen Giap Road.
