Vietnam’s lawmaking National Assembly (NA) elected Luong Cuong, permanent member of the Party Central Committee's Secretariat, as state president for the 2021-26 tenure on Monday.
General Cuong was unanimously elected with all 440 present NA deputies voting in his favor.
The legislature also approved a resolution on the election.
Cuong is the successor to Party General Secretary To Lam.
He swore allegiance to the nation, people, and constitution in a swearing-in ceremony.
He pledged unwavering loyalty to the Fatherland, the people, and the constitution.
He also vowed to work diligently to fulfill the responsibilities entrusted to him by the Party, the state, and the people.

Luong Cuong, born in 1957 in the northern province of Phu Tho, holds a bachelor’s degree in Party building and state governance.
He is a member of the 13th Politburo, a secretary of the 12th and 13th Party Central Committee, a member of the 11th, 12th, and 13th Party Central Committee, and an NA deputy.
Cuong was promoted to major general in 2006, lieutenant general in 2009, senior lieutenant general in 2014, and general -- the highest rank of the Vietnam People's Army -- in 2019.
The Politburo named him the permanent member of the Party Central Committee's Secretariat in May 2024.
