Viettel Cyber Security, an arm of Vietnam’s military-run telecom group Viettel, claimed the championship at the 2024 Pwn2Own competition, held in Ireland from October 22 to 25, marking the second time the cybersecurity company has won such competition.
Pwn2Own is known as one of the world’s largest and most prestigious cybersecurity competitions.
Contestants of the 2024 competition were white-hat hackers and security researchers from around the world.
They competed to discover and exploit zero-day vulnerabilities, previously unknown security flaws, in devices like smartphones, security cameras and office equipment, and software used by enterprises.
The Viettel Cyber Security team identified and exploited nine zero-day vulnerabilities in products from HP, Canon, Synology, and QNAP Systems.
Their impressive performance earned them 33 points, nearly double the score of the second-place Team Cluck from the U.S., which scored 17.25 points.
Each zero-day vulnerability brought US$20,000-50,000 and Viettel Cyber Security fetched over $200,000.
The zero-day bugs found by Viettel Cyber Security will help manufacturers improve the security of their devices, preventing the leakage of personal and business data.
Pwn2Own, organized by Trend Micro's Zero Day Initiative, first debuted in April 2007 in Vancouver, Canada.
After zero-day bugs are revealed, Trend Micro's Zero Day Initiative will work with device and software developers to eliminate the bugs in a bid to ensure safety for users.
