Police in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday pressed charges against a 38-year-old Vietnamese deliveryman for allegedly snatching an iPhone 13 from a Turkish female teacher in Go Vap District last month.
The suspect was identified as Nguyen Huu Truong, residing in the city’s District 12.
Investigators of Go Vap District, where the phone theft took place, are also working to file charges against those involved in consuming stolen items.
According to a police report, the phone theft occurred on August 29 on Thong Nhat Street, Ward 16, Go Vap.
When the 29-year-old teacher was walking on the street, a motorcyclist wearing a delivery jacket approached the foreign teacher, snatched her iPhone 13, and immediately ran away.
The victim shouted for help and chased the thief to little avail.
She then went to a local police station to report the theft afterward.
On August 30, police officers identified Truong as the suspected phone thief and took him to a police station for questioning.
They also discovered that Truong has two previous convictions for theft and illicit drug trafficking.
Truong admitted that he worked as a deliveryman.
After snatching the iPhone 13 from the expat teacher, he sold it for VND2.8 million (US$115) on a social media platform, he confessed.
Police already recovered the stolen phone and returned it to the victim.
