Many provinces in central Vietnam will be facing heavy downpours from now until Tuesday next week, with rainfall estimated to reach up to 700 millimeters, according to the national weather center.
Ha Tinh and Quang Binh Provinces recorded 90 – 105 millimeters of rain on Thursday.
Many schools in Da Nang City, Thua Thien Hue Province and Quang Tri Province allowed students to stay home due to floods caused by heavy rain on Friday.
Localities from Nghe An to Quang Nam Provinces are also forecast to be battered by thunderstorms on Saturday.
Torrential rain might hit the central region with the precipitation ranging from 150 to 300 millimeters on Sunday and Monday next week.
The national weather center also warned of the ongoing downpour on Tuesday next week.
Phung Tien Dung, a representative from the national weather center, said that the deluge of rain will increase the water levels of many rivers from Nghe An to Quang Ngai Provinces such as Ca River and La River during the period.
Many parts of the central region might face flash floods and landslides triggered by the relentless rain.
Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang on Thursday issued a telegram asking the relevant ministries and the provinces from Thanh Hoa to Quang Ngai to respond to floods and downpours.
Central provinces were told to promptly evacuate households in landslide- and flood-prone areas to safe shelters.
The government urged the Ministries of Agriculture and Rural Development, and Industry-Trade to guarantee industrial and agricultural production, and take action to reduce a risk of dam breach.
The Ministry of Education and Training was tasked with cooperating with local authorities to ensure the safety of teachers and students, and protect learning and studying equipment in flood-affected areas.
