Police in Hanoi and northern Thai Binh Province jointly arrested a 38-year-old man hailing from Thai Binh on suspicion of murdering a 17-year-old girl in Hanoi and dismembering her body to destroy the evidence of his crime, the Hanoi Police informed on Sunday.

The suspect, Ta Duy Khanh, residing in the Ocean Park Urban Area in Hanoi, was apprehended on Saturday night while he was hiding in his hometown in Thai Binh Province.

When he learned that the police were in his hometown to arrest him, Khanh readied a knife and hid himself under a bed.

The police and his family encouraged him to turn himself in but he went into a state of panic.

When being captured, Khanh even attempted to commit suicide by cutting his neck.

At about 12:30 pm on Friday last week, several fishermen found human body parts floating on a section of the Red River in Gia Lam District, Hanoi.

The remaining parts of the victim’s body were later found on the river bank.

Police determined the victim to be H.Y.N., 17, residing in Ba Dinh District, Hanoi. She was the runner-up in an ao dai (Vietnamese traditional costume) beauty contest in 2022.

The Hanoi police are further investigating the case.
