The People’s Committee of Thai Binh Province in northern Vietnam on Tuesday levied a fine of VND80 million (US$3,265) on a bakery in Tien Hai District for causing food poisoning for 28 students.
Hoang Quyet Thang, 34, the owner of Trang Moon Bakery in An Ninh Commune, was subject to the fine as the bakery provided salted egg sponge cakes to a Mid-Autumn Festival celebration party in late September, causing the hospitalizations of dozens of students from Tien Hai Elementary School.
Besides, the provincial administration suspended the bakery’s salted egg sponge cake processing, production, and trading operations for three months.
Thang was also ordered to cover all costs of medical treatment for the poisoned students.
The punishments were based on testing of samples of the cakes that were found being contaminated with the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.
On September 28, the parents of 37 fourth graders in class 4A1 from the school organized a Mid-Autumn Festival celebration party at which salted egg sponge cakes and other snacks were served.
In the afternoon, 28 students who ate the cakes showed symptoms of food poisoning such as stomach ache, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever.
Among them, 25 were hospitalized while the other three received home treatment.
