Traffic police said on Saturday that they had fined a 49-year-old driver VND5 million (US$203) and revoked his driver’s license for three months after he was caught driving a passenger bus in the wrong direction on National Highway 2 in Tuyen Quang Province, northern Vietnam.
On October 26, T.T.T., residing in Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province, also in northern Vietnam, was driving the passenger bus against traffic on a three-kilometer road section with a sign banning wrong-way driving.
His act was recorded by a black box of a truck on the national highway.
If the truck driver had failed to promptly detect the passenger bus and slow down, a serious accident might have happened, according to police officers.
T. admitted his violation, claiming that the beginning of the road was under construction, so he drove his vehicle to the wrong lane by mistake.
He also thought that the number of vehicles on the national highway section was small at night.
“The violation is extremely serious, posing a high risk of traffic accidents with a high casualty rate," police said.
"The driver could foresee the consequences but intentionally committed the violation, so he should be criticized and heavily punished."
