A 72-year-old cleaner in Thua Thien Hue Province, central Vietnam returned VND30 million (US$1,230) to a market vendor who lost it earlier at a local wet market.
Ho Thi Dieu is financially unstable and works as a seasonal cleaner at Truoi Market, located in Loc An Commune, Phu Loc District, Ho Dac Nong, director of the Truoi market cooperative, said on Monday after confirming that Dieu had given back the money to the rightful owner.
While cleaning the market at noon on Sunday, Dieu spotted a bag containing VND30 million in cash, which is a large sum of money to her.
She kept the bag and waited for the owner to come back to the market to search for the lost possession.
About an hour later, Tran Thi Thanh Th., a 52-year-old vendor at the market, returned to the marketplace with a panic-stricken face to look for her lost money and fortunately met Dieu.
The cleaner gave back the lost bag and money to the vendor without demanding anything in return.
According to Nong, the cleaner lives in a poor family in Loc An.
She makes a living by cleaning the market every day and gets paid a variable amount of money by vendors there. The market cooperative does not pay her, Nong said.
“All of the people at the market love Dieu as she is kind, gentle, and willing to help others," Nong added.
“She is poor but not greedy.”
