Construction waste is seen at the Lang – Yen Lang Intersection in Hanoi on November 20, 2023.

More than 100 metric tons of construction waste has been disposed of along a street in Hanoi over the past few days, a representative of Hanoi Urban Environment Company (Urenco) told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Wednesday.

Residents living near Lang Street in Dong Da District, Hanoi said the construction waste piled up in 10 sites along the street.

Le Thi Hien, a 63-year-old resident, said households renovated their houses during the year-end period and many of them discarded construction waste on Lang Street.

They disposed of the waste at night, Hien noted.

They sneakily dumped the construction waste along a section near the To Lich River as the river is deserted, Hien said, adding that local authorities should install surveillance cameras along the section and impose strict sanctions on violators.

The Urenco representative said the company and the administrations in some wards in Dong Da District were collecting the construction waste.

“A contract between Urenco and the People’s Committee of Dong Da District does not include the construction waste collection and transport. However, we proposed supplementing the job and got the district’s nod," the Urenco representative informed.

“Urenco has reported the volume of construction waste to the local authorities.”

The representative added that the disposal of construction waste occurs frequently toward the end of the year.

Local authorities should beef up inspections and the punishment of those who dump waste in public places.

The construction waste is cleaned up as of the afternoon of November 21, 2023.

The construction waste was cleaned up as of the afternoon of November 21, 2023.

A leader of the People’s Committee of Dong Da District told Tuoi Tre that the district had acted to handle the construction waste on Lang Street but refused to talk about long-term solutions for absolutely dealing with the issue.

Hanoi discards some 4,000 metric tons of waste per day.

The Vietnamese capital city assigned two companies to pilot the recycling of construction waste as a four-hectare landfill for such construction waste in Dong Anh District is not enough to harbor the city’s debris, according to the director of a local environment company.

Residents do not transport construction waste to the landfill as they do not want to pay the transport and treatment costs.
