A tunnel at the intersection of Phan Thuc Duyen and Tran Quoc Hoan Streets in Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City is now over 50 percent complete and expected to be done by July next year to ease congestion near Tan Son Nhat International Airport.

After 10 months of construction, a road leading to the tunnel near Hoang Van Thu Street has been paved, while the tunnel has been dug by 10 meters.

A representative of the Transportation Works Construction Investment Project Management Authority of Ho Chi Minh City, the investor of the project, said they were building a wastewater drainage system and a temporary overpass on Tran Quoc Hoan Street to ensure normal traffic on the street.

The tunnel, part of a package to construct a road linking Tran Quoc Hoan and Cong Hoa Streets in Tan Binh District, commenced on February 6 this year.

It was designed to have a length of 400 meters and two lanes, with the main tunnel section measuring 42 meters in length and two approach roads on its sides being 140 and 180 meters long.

Construction of the road connecting Tran Quoc Hoan and Cong Hoa Streets, which is some four kilometers long and requires an estimated investment of over VND4.8 trillion (US$197.7 million), kicked off in late 2022 and was expected to be completed in September 2024.

Upon completion, the road will include a 988-meter-long overpass, which will have four lanes with a width of 17 meters, in front of the T3 terminal of Tan Son Nhat International Airport, and two tunnels at the Phan Thuc Duyen-Tran Quoc Hoan and Truong Chinh-Tan Ky Tan Quy intersections.

The road project is now some 10 percent complete.

When in place, it is expected to ease congestion in the airport area.
