Nha Trang City, located in Vietnam’s Khanh Hoa Province, is planning to convert a seaside night market into a pedestrian area and book street, a local official said on Sunday.
The provincial administration has asked relevant agencies for feedback on the beach city’s urban zoning plan, according to Nguyen Thanh Ha, office chief at the provincial People’s Committee.
As part of the zoning plan, the seaside night market area adjacent to a convention center at 46 Tran Phu Street and April 2 Square would be transformed into a pedestrian and book street.
The standing board of the provincial Party Committee asked relevant bodies to renovate the area in line with the cityscape and prevailing regulations.
The administration of Nha Trang was told to review the zoning plan before submitting it to the provincial authorities for appraisal and approval.
Commenting on the issue, a number of local residents and ex-officials polled by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper endorsed the idea of turning the seaside night market into a pedestrian and book street.
Pham Van Chi, president of the Khanh Hoa Province Intellectual Association, former deputy chief of the provincial Party Committee, and ex-chairman of the provincial administration, advocated for the city’s plan to develop a pedestrian and book street at the existing night market, which he deemed 'too messy.'
The association suggested that an area surrounding the circular Dam Market in the city undergo a renovation to become a night market to serve tourists and help the locals improve their incomes.
