The management board of Dong Ba Market in Thua Thien-Hue Province, central Vietnam has announced a reward of VND500,000 (US$20.5) for individuals who report unscrupulous traders for ripping off tourists at the market, Hoang Thi Nhu Thanh, head of the board, said on Wednesday.

In recent days, the management board has implemented a policy requiring traders at the market to prominently display the prices of their goods, comprising even low-cost items like lighters, sandals, scissors, and cakes.

While the policy has nearly eradicated reports of scammy vendors at the 124-year-old market, the management board said there have recently been complaints that some traders are no longer publicizing their prices or attempting to rip off tourists.

“We have repeatedly launched inspections but have not found any violation," Thanh said.

"Although these cases occur irregularly, we are determined to eliminate them and rebuild the reputation of Dong Ba Market.”

The board also requested that residents and visitors who encounter ripe-offs film such encounters and send the videos to it.

If a case is confirmed, the individual who made the report will be rewarded with VND500,000 and the vendors involved will be subjected to a seven-day suspension and a fine in line with the law, Thanh shared.

Nguyen Thi Thu Huong, a confectionery trader at Dong Ba Market, said that sellers there generally endorse this initiative.

They believe that publicizing the prices of products will contribute to enhancing the market's reputation and attract a greater number of customers.
