Police in Binh Thuan Province, south-central Vietnam have detained a man of Russian nationality on suspicion of killing his countryman out of their conflict over room renting.
Nikiforov Roman, 40, was taken into custody over 48 hours after law enforcement initiated an investigation prompted by a report of a body discovered in an uninhabited area in Phan Thiet City, located within Binh Thuan Province, local police said on Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as Vasilii, a 44-year-old Russian man.
His lifeless body was discovered wrapped in bed drapes and plastic bags by local residents late on Thursday afternoon, police officers said.
Upon removing the coverings, law enforcement officers observed that the victim had sustained head injuries, and his legs were bound.
Based on Roman's initial statements, he and the deceased Russian individual had a close relationship and had previously shared a rented room.
On January 30, a heated dispute erupted between the two individuals over room rental matters, leading to a physical altercation that took place in a rented room in Phan Thiet's Ham Tien Ward.
Roman employed a hammer to fatally assault his compatriot and subsequently transported the victim's body on a motorcycle to the aforementioned remote area, abandoning it in an attempt to eliminate evidence of the crime.
During the search of the room, law enforcement confiscated the hammer, the motorcycle, and other items connected to the killing.
Local police are actively pursuing their investigation.
