A group of four Vietnamese people have been detained on suspicion of shoplifting in Tokyo and seven prefectures including Osaka and Fukuoka, with the total theft losses estimated at US$135,000, Japanese police said on Tuesday.
These detainees, including two men and two women, in their 30s and 40s, were suspected of involvement in 67 thefts at Uniqlo and other clothing shops in Japan, Kyodo News reported.
One of the men is Nguyen Hoang Anh, a 38-year-old man whose residential address has yet to be known, police said.
The group is believed to have stolen a total of 5,237 items, including sweaters and down jackets, during their visits to Japan between December 2018 and October 2023.
According to investigators, Vietnam also has Uniqlo stores, which are operated by Japan’s Fast Retailing Co., Ltd., but the suspects may have targeted Japan where there are many self-checkout stores.
All the four admitted to the allegations and said they were facing financial difficulties.
The stolen items, valued at about 20 million Japanese yen (nearly $135,000), might have been sold online in Vietnam, investigators said.
Fukuoka Prefectural Police, who apprehended the group, have also obtained an arrest warrant for a woman in her 40s who lives in Vietnam, suspecting that she provided instructions for the four suspects.
