Phu Quoc City in Kien Giang Province, located in southern Vietnam, is set to start the temporary operation of the Phu Quoc International Cruise Ship Port project in Duong Dong Ward from August, local authorities said on Tuesday.
The port covers approximately 180 hectares and carries a price tag of over VND1.6 trillion (US$64.7 million).
The project got off the ground in 2015 and is scheduled to be fully completed in 2025.
When operating at full capacity, the port will not only facilitate the synchronization of infrastructure on Phu Quoc Island, a popular tourist site in the southern region, but also act as a stimulus to attract investors and international travelers to the city.
The project consists of an 850-meter-long breakwater, a harbor which can handle 225,000 GT ships, and other components.
Over VND1 trillion ($40.3 million) has been disbursed for the project.
Relevant units are working to complete a road connecting with the cruise ship port in April, said Nguyen Duy Dien, head of the Phu Quoc Construction Investment Project Management Board.
Other delayed subprojects, such as firefighting tanks, buoy systems, and waterway passage dredging, will be completed by August to make the project ready for temporary operations.
Large cruise ships and vessels can dock at the port in August, Dien noted.
As per the Phu Quoc City People’s Committee, following the commencement of port operations, opulent cruise ships accommodating 3,000 to 4,000 international passengers will have the opportunity to dock in the city.
This will enable foreign visitors to embark on explorations of the island city.
