Sixty people were hospitalized on suspicion of food poisoning after eating chicken rice on Tuesday at a restaurant in Nha Trang, a resort city on the south-central coast of Vietnam, local health authorities reported.
By Wednesday evening, the number of people admitted to hospitals due to suspected food poisoning in Nha Trang, the capital city of Khanh Hoa Province, had increased to 60, according to Dr. Bui Xuan Minh, director of the provincial Department of Health.
Among these patients, 20 with slight poisoning levels were discharged after receiving care, while the rest need further treatment, Dr. Minh said.
Shortly after receiving reports about the suspected food poisoning at 8:30 pm on Tuesday, the Nha Trang Health Center sent its staff to local hospitals to collect relevant information in order to carry out an investigation.
Most of the victims had symptoms which included abdominal pain, nausea, loose stools, fever, and fatigue, the center reported.
The cause of poisoning has yet to be identified.
At Saigon Nha Trang General Hospital, a number of patients suspected of poisoning were still undergoing treatment on Wednesday evening.

Le Thi Ly Na, from Da Lat, said her group of 11 adults and three children visited Tram Anh Chicken Rice, a restaurant on Ba Trieu Street in Nha Trang, for lunch during their trip to the city on Tuesday.
Nearly the entire group began to vomit and experience headaches within a few hours of the meal, the woman said.
“We want authorities to clarify the cause of the poisoning. Since her admission late on Tuesday, my daughter has been unconscious with a high fever of nearly 40 degrees Celsius,” Na said.
She mentioned that the restaurant has reached out to her family in an attempt to address the issue, yet she still desires an official apology.
“We would have been back to Da Lat if we hadn’t suffered from the serious food poisoning case,” Na complained.
Dr. Minh stated that the provincial health department has instructed hospitals to utilize all available resources to care for and treat the suspected victims of food poisoning.
"The restaurant was temporarily suspended from operation on Wednesday for investigative purposes," he added.
"Health workers have also collected samples from both patients and the suspected food items for testing."
