Many drivers passing through a Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway section near the Long Thanh International Airport project in the namesake district of Dong Nai Province, southern Vietnam have recently complained about dust from the construction site.

Such dust has affected the visibility on the expressway and forced vehicles to slow down.

The peak time of the 'dust storms' which are some 20-30 minutes apart from each other is from noon to afternoon.

During the same period last year, dust also blanketed thousands of houses, projects, factories, and schools in Long Thanh District and neighboring districts.

Local authorities have devised various strategies to mitigate dust emissions from the project, including constructing reservoirs and deploying water tank trucks to provide ample water for site spraying, as well as surfacing the on-site roads with macadam.

The airport project, which carries an estimated price tag of VND336.63 trillion (US$13.6 billion) and is located some 40 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City, will cover around 5,000 hectares of land and is designed to have an annual capacity of 100 million passengers along with five million tonnes of cargo.

Once in place, it will be the largest airport in the nation.
