Some 400-500 residents on Phu Quoc, a touristy island city off Kien Giang Province in southern Vietnam, on Saturday night rushed to the city’s medical center to have their blood checked in the hope that their blood could help save a 39-year-old pregnant woman suffering heavy bleeding.
They congregated in the medical center after a call for type-O blood donations to save the woman was shared in a group on Facebook at 10:00 pm.
Among them, 10 people, who have blood appropriate to the patient, donated their blood.
At the time, the medical center was crowded as many people wanted to donate their blood to save the pregnant woman, D.Q.T., a Phu Quoc resident, said, adding that he wished the woman would recover quickly.
The medical center admitted the 21-week pregnant woman, named H.T.M., a resident of the southernmost province of Ca Mau, who currently resides on Phu Quoc, at about 6:20 pm on Saturday, the medical center announced on Sunday morning.
She was diagnosed with hemorrhagic shock due to the bleeding placenta previa.
Doctors later performed a surgical operation in the hope of saving the woman.
Due to the heavy bleeding, M. suffered a blood clotting disorder.
Thanks to the help of local residents, doctors promptly gave a blood transfusion to the patient.
However, she remains in critical condition.
Doctors continued to transfuse blood into the woman and planned to transfer her to a higher-level hospital for further treatment, a doctor at the Phu Quoc Medical Center said.
M. has four children, with two of them being born by caesarean.
