Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Tuesday afternoon presided over a welcome ceremony for his Russian counterpart Mikhail Vladimirovich Mishustin, who had arrived in Hanoi the same day for a two-day visit to Vietnam.

This is Mishustin's first visit to Vietnam since assuming his post as Russian prime minister in 2020.

This is also the first time he and Vietnamese PM Chinh have met.

The Southeast Asian country is his first destination in 2025 and the Russian prime minister is the first foreign leader to visit Vietnam this year.

PM Chinh expressed his pleasure at meeting the Russian counterpart in the area where the latter’s car was parked before they headed to the platform of honor.

During the ceremony, the two leaders saluted the national flags of both countries, reviewed Vietnam’s guard of honour, and introduced members of their respective delegations.

The two prime ministers then held talks.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Russia Dang Minh Khoi said PM Mishustin’s visit to Vietnam was meant to strengthen the Vietnam-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership and to prepare for important events relating to the two countries’ bilateral relations in 2025.

The two countries will celebrate the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic ties (1950-2025) in the next two weeks.

Through the visit, the two sides will urge the deployment of plans to further develop their relations.

This is also an opportunity for both sides to review and discuss solutions to obstacles to their bilateral cooperation, the progress of key cooperation projects in the fields of energy and industry, and the expansion of their collaboration in other potential sectors.

Russian Ambassador to Vietnam Gennady Bezdetko stated that Vietnam and Russia are set to prioritize the execution of cooperative projects in sectors like energy, transport, industry, and agriculture, among others.

He also mentioned that several cooperation agreements between the two nations are anticipated to be signed during the visit of the Russian premier.

Vietnam-Russia bilateral trade rose 8.3 percent in 2023 and 24 percent to hit US$4.4 billion in January-September last year.

Their cooperation in the oil and gas sector is developing significantly, primarily within the framework of the Vietsovpetro joint venture.

In June 2024, Vietsovpetro reached an important milestone of producing its 250 millionth metric ton of oil.

The collaboration in supplying food and agricultural products to each other is also active.

Bezdetko emphasized that there is significant potential for deepening and diversifying cooperation between Vietnam and Russia.

He noted that this cooperative partnership rests on a strong foundation of long-standing friendship and mutual support, which not only secures the fundamental benefits and fosters prosperous development for both nations but also enhances the well-being of their citizens.
