Six houses in Bac Ninh Province, northern Vietnam collapsed into the local Cau River in the early hours of Sunday, according to local authorities.
Tong Quang Thanh, chairman of the administration in Van An Ward, Bac Ninh City, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the incident happened at 2:00 am.
As residents in these houses had already been evacuated to safety, no human lives were lost in the incident.
Thanh reported that this was not the first house collapse due to land erosion along the Cau River.
Local authorities have arranged temporary accommodations for residents.
Some are staying at a communal house, while the remaining have moved to their relatives’ homes.
As a kindergarten will relocate in the near future, the ward will allow some families to live on its campus, the official said.
He added that local officials would conduct round-the-clock patrols in the vicinity and notify the public of an extended area susceptible to potential hazards.
The Bac Ninh City administration had earlier declared a state of emergency in areas along the Cau River, erected warning signs, and detached officials for guard duty to prevent locals from accessing the dangerous areas.
The provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will coordinate with the Bac Ninh City administration to draw up a scheme to fish out the collapsed houses in order not to obstruct the water flow on the river and review in-danger areas to evacuate residents.
