The administration in Ho Chi Minh City has tasked Thu Duc City and all districts with calling on residents to use fresh water sparingly and store it in a bid to respond to droughts, water shortages, and saltwater intrusion.
The municipal administration has written to ask departments, agencies, Thu Duc City, and every district to take measures to adapt to droughts and saline intrusion during the dry season.
They were told to closely monitor the progression of natural disasters and extreme weather events, particularly heatwaves, droughts, and saltwater intrusion, as well as the status of water resources.
The city also required identifying areas at high risk of water shortages to ensure sufficient supply.
Ho Chi Minh City will dredge canals and reasonably operate sluice gates to prevent saline intrusion to serve local residents’ daily life and production.
The municipal People’s Committee assigned the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to urge investors to speed up irrigation projects.
The Department of Construction will have to coordinate with Saigon Water Corporation to adopt solutions to respond to the fresh water shortage risk.
Many southern Vietnamese localities are facing a shortfall of fresh water caused by saline intrusion and prolonged drought.
Earlier, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh asked officials to ensure sufficient fresh water supply to residents in the Mekong Delta as saltwater intrusion is forecast to continue in the region until mid-May.
