A dozen pigs at a local farm in Quang Ninh Province, northern Vietnam have been destroyed after they were found to be infected with African swine fever (ASF), authorities confirmed on Friday.
The ASF outbreak was detected at a pig farm owned by Le Van Kham, residing in Tien Phong Commune, Quang Yen Town.
His pig herd, including one 60-kilogram sow and 11 piglets, developed suspected ASF symptoms like fever, loss of appetite, and skin redness from Tuesday this week, the Quang Yen Agricultural Technical Service Center said on Friday.
The center teamed up with a regional animal health agency in neighboring Hai Phong City to collect samples from the sick pigs.
After these pigs tested positive for the ASF virus, local authorities in Quang Yen ordered the culling of the affected pigs and asked the owner to disinfect the farm to prevent the highly contagious disease from spreading further.
The administration of Quang Yen also asked the communes and wards across the town to ramp up efforts to brief local residents on ASF-related information and preventive measures.
