A tornado ripped through the waters off Van Hung Commune under Van Ninh District in the south-central Vietnamese province of Khanh Hoa on Wednesday, capsizing a fishing boat, according to a local official.
Tran Trung Thong, vice-chairman of the commune’s administration, said that the tornado swept through the coastal area near Ha Gia Village at 3:00 pm the same day.
Apart from capsizing the fishing boat, the tornado hit several other sea vessels and coracles.
The tornado caused no casualties, Thong said.
Thuy Diem, a resident of Ha Gia Village in Van Hung Commune, said that she had filmed a tornadic waterspout that tore through the coast and frightened both fishermen and locals.
The tornado dissipated before reaching locals’ homes.
According to Diem, she had spotted a tornado that hit the coast about two or three years ago, but it was much further from the mainland.
a tornado is a natural disaster formed by atmospheric instability, with air rising from severe thunderstorms, according to the national weather center.
A tornado might signal a powerful storm, the center warned.
Tornadoes are violently rotating columns of air, visible as rotating funnels of cloud that connect the sky with the earth or ocean.
A powerful tornado can engulf anything in its path and cause extensive damage to houses.
