Paving bricks and concrete around the roots of the trees along Nguyen Thai Son Street in Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City, were removed on Wednesday.
Ho Chi Minh City Greenery Parks Co. Ltd., a state-run company, deployed workers to clear chains from the tree trunks and concrete from their roots.
The workers faced the task of breaking through concrete layers three to four centimeters thick to free the trees.
They constructed tree beds to ensure the trees could grow unhindered.
After the concrete layers were removed, many local residents were dismayed to see that several tree roots were deformed and that the concrete had tightly adhered to some of them.

Phuong Hoa, a 34-year-old resident living on Nguyen Thai Son Street, expressed concern that the trees could not develop normally because their roots had been covered with concrete for a long time.
"Luckily, the concrete was removed. If it hadn't been, the trees may have died soon," Hoa added.
Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper had earlier found that along Nguyen Thai Son Street were over 20 trees four to five meters tall each.
Some of them had their feet deformed as concrete had suffocated them.
Some residents even used large chains to tie signboards to the tree trunks, causing the bark to peel off and dry in hot weather.
