More stringent measures should be put in place to combat false or misleading content created by social media users, like Tiktokers and YouTubers, an official in Can Tho City, southern Vietnam suggested.
Nguyen Trung Nhan, chairman of the Can Tho chapter of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, voiced his concern over misinformation running rampant online at a regular meeting of the municipal People’s Council on Wednesday.
He argued that the existing control over TikTokers and YouTubers in the locale remains inadequate, with lots of local residents fearing that the distribution of false information or misleading content on social media platforms could pose cybersecurity risks and result in social unrest.
Nhan added that the number of cybercrimes is on the rise with more sophisticated and difficult-to-detect attacks.
He recommended the municipal People’s Committee to intensify control over information featured on social media as well as individuals working as TikTokers and YouTubers, provide anti-cybercrime units with more advanced equipment, and launch more frequent campaigns to crack down on cybercrimes.
Aside from cybersecurity issues, Nhan said that citizens expressed their concerns over an ongoing lay-off wave and the growing number of businesses seeking to disband or cease operations.
While their salaries are still unchanged, the rising prices of fertilizers, pesticides, electricity, airfares, and other essential items have left a negative impact on workers, the unemployed, and those with unstable income.
The official proposed that the Can Tho People’s Council and People’s Committee take measures to call for more investment into hi-tech parks and promote the exports of local staple farm produce to spur the southern city’s economic growth.
