A heavy, morning-to-evening rain, with rainfall of up to 300mm, deeply submerged many parts of Hanoi on Tuesday, turning numerous streets into ‘rivers’ and flooding a lot of vehicles, which led to serious traffic congestion.
The prolonged torrential rain, resulting from the circulation of the tropical depression that hit northern Vietnam’s Quang Ninh Province on Tuesday morning, inundated many streets in the capital with precipitation ranging from 100mm to 300mm.
As recorded by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reporters, many tunnel sections on Thang Long Avenue were submerged under 50-60 cm of rainwater, causing many cars and motorbikes attempting to cross the underground route to break down.

On a section of the Thang Long Avenue frontage road, around 300 meters in length, the floodwater reached a depth of up to 80 cm, making it look like a river.
Such serious inundation in the avenue’s tunnel area, as well as on many other routes across the city, caused traffic chaos and congestion, especially during rush hours when many people were returning home on the outskirts of Hanoi after work.
Specifically, heavy flooding began around 2:30 pm on Tuesday on streets such as Phan Van Truong, Tran Binh, Quan Nhan, Quyet Thang, Quang Trung, To Hieu, Trieu Khuc, and Ngoc Hoi, along with several tunnel sections of Thang Long Avenue, Hanoi Drainage Company told Tuoi Tre.

Many people had to manage to walk through a sea of water to get themselves and their broken-down motorbikes out of heavily flooded areas.
Around 5:00 pm, inundation remained in many locations in the Thang Long Avenue tunnel area, as well as on such streets as Trieu Khuc, Ngoc Hoi, Quyet Thang, and Quang Trung.
According to the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting, the heavy rain and thunderstorms that have hit Hanoi since Tuesday will move out of the area from Wednesday evening.
