A landslide from a high mountain in Lao Cai Province, northern Vietnam buried 15 residents of Sa Pa Town, killing six and injuring nine on Sunday.
Around 1:00 pm Sunday, heavy rain caused a 20-meter-high mountain to collapse in Sa Pa Town, flooding terraced fields and the residential area of Hoa Su Pan 1 Village in Muong Hoa Commune.
The landslide hit an area about 100 meters from the mountain’s base, home to 26 people in four houses. Fifteen were buried under mud and debris, while 11 managed to escape.
By 3:30 pm, rescue teams had recovered six bodies, including 68-year-old Vang Thi Thao, 25-year-old Giang Thi Chu, one-year-old Chau Gia Hung, and newborn Vang Van Vien, according to VnExpress.
The nine injured were taken to Sa Pa Town General Hospital and are in stable condition.
This landslide happened in the wake of typhoon Yagi, which brought nearly 150 mm of rain from 7:00 am Saturday to 1:00 pm Sunday to O Quy Ho Ward and Hoang Lien and Muong Hoa Communes.
Earlier on Sunday morning, a separate landslide in Tan Minh Commune, Da Bac District, Hoa Binh Province, northern Vietnam, triggered by the same aftermath, killed four people.
The national meteorological agency has warned of a high risk of landslides across 17 of 25 northern provinces, including Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Son La, Hoa Binh, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, Vinh Phuc, Phu Tho, Bac Kan, Thai Nguyen, Cao Bang, Lang Son, Quang Ninh, Bac Giang, and Hai Phong.
